If this issue occurs regularly it may indicate an underlying hardware issue or lack of resources (ie. system RAM).<\/p>\n<p>The output of vssadmin list writers may look similar to:<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Writer name: &#8216;Microsoft Exchange Writer&#8217;<br \/>\nWriter Id: {76fe1ac4-15f7-4bcd-987e-8e1acb462fb7}<br \/>\nWriter Instance Id: {088e9271-a67d-4bd4-82c6-b4b20c59fff4}<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">State: [9] Failed<\/span><br \/>\nLast error: Timed out<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Resolution<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>Check  to determine whether the <a title=\"How to check the state of VSS writers in Windows\" href=\"http:\/\/support.cybersecure.com\/?p=2513\">Exchange VSS writer state<\/a> is showing as &#8220;stable&#8221;.
